Each player commands two Characters, individually generated. It is advised that one Character acts as the party ‘face’ whilst the other is capable at combat.

At the start of the game, each Character is generated with normal starting XP (1000).

It may be that a Character dies, either due to a player’s choice or because they have run out of Fate points to burn. At this point, a new (plot-appropriate) character is generated to replace them, with the same XP. Any Influence gains do not carry over to the new Character, though the benefits of any completed Explication carry over. Any progress on an Explication in which the dead Character is involved is lost.

Your two Characters can act independently of one another (though, of course, this may represent more posting). You may choose one Character to be your protagonist and have the other only make the occasional quip, or otherwise cover their activities in abstract terms. That’s all up to you.
